WHAT IS HARDWOOD PLYWOOD?
Hardwood Plywood panels have decorative wood surfaces. Hardwood veneers are common, but selected softwoods are also used. These panels are designed for interior, decorative use, and while they have minor structural values, they are not structural panels and should not be used as such. They may have cores of veneer, particleboard, Medium Density Fiberboard or lumber.
WHAT ARE THE PRINCIPAL APPLICATIONS FOR HARDWOOD PLYWOOD?
Kitchen Cabinets, vanities, furniture, store fixtures, wall panels and architectural
interiors are some of the many applications for hardwood plywood. Decorative,
hardwood plywood is not recommended as sub-floor or flooring unless specifically
manufactured for those applications.
WHAT DETERMINES THE COSTS OF HARDWOOD PLYWOOD?
Many things affect the cost, but the specie and grade of the surface veneers are the most significant and can account for as much as 50-60% of a panel's cost. Building material retailers typically inventory "cabinet or utility" face grades of popular species. Less common species or higher face grades may require sourcing from commercial hardwood distribution. Core materials affect cost as well, with particleboard being the least expensive. Veneer cores are typically the most expensive and Medium Density Fiberboard is in between the two.
WHAT MAKES HARDWOOD PLYWOOD "GREEN"?
For starters, wood is renewable unlike concrete, steel or gypsum. With modern
third-party certification programs like the Forest Stewardship Council, you can be assured that the source of wood fiber is sustainable. About half of the hardwood plywood sold in North America is manufactured domestically, and you can probably find a regional source, reducing shipping's impact on the environment. There are regional and national restrictions on the release of toxins and volatile organic compounds from hardwood plywood. Green Building programs, like the US Green Building Council's LEED program, set even more stringent standards for indoor air quality. Most manufacturers offer No-Added Formaldehyde products like States' Elemental panels.
WHAT IS APPLEPLY®?
ApplePly is a registered trademark of States Industries LLC that refers to a premium quality core construction made from uniformly thin Birch veneers. ApplePly panels machine more like solid lumber than plywood and the edges are attractive enough to become design features in furniture and fixtures. See the ApplePly
section of this website, or visit www.ApplePly.com
WHAT IS A "PREFINISHED" PANEL?
Prefinished panels are manufactured and shipped from the mill with one of several
optional coatings already applied and cured. Like States Industries, most
manufacturers use ultraviolet cured, epoxy acrylate coatings because they have
superior performance characteristics and emit no Volatile Organic Compounds.
brand prefinished panels set the standard for the industry.
